1. 2024 New Futures Fellowships!
3-month remote fellowship program that focuses on innovative and
interdisciplinary solutions to the climate crisis. This fellowship
brings together activists and scholars from around the globe to
conduct research, make policy recommendations, and produce creative

3. #StopDigitalDictatorship: Confronting the Influence of Online Hate
Campaigns in the Forced Expulsion of Rohingya from Indonesia
The Manushya Foundation, ALTSEAN-Burma, Cambodian Center for Human
Rights, ELSAM, Foundation for Media Alternatives, ILGA Asia, Rohingya
Maìyafuìnor Collaborative Network, SAFEnet, The 88 Project, and
Women’s Peace Network, as the ASEAN Regional Coalition to
#StopDigitalDictatorship, stand in solidarity with all Rohingya
refugees. They call on the Indonesian Government to fulfill their
international and domestic obligations by actively protecting Rohingya
refugees who are currently seeking shelter and protection.

4. Hashtag Palestine 2023: Report on Palestinian Digital Rights During War
7amleh, the Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, issued
its 9th annual report, “Hashtag Palestine 2023.” The report focuses on
the digital rights violations that Palestinians and supporters of
Palestinian rights are exposed to in the digital space and on social
media. It also offers a diagnosis of the state of digital rights in
2023, and analyzes the impact of various political and field
developments on the digital rights situation over the past year.

5. Nepal Civil Society Submitted Input on Social Media Bill
Digital Rights Nepal, in collaboration with 34 allied organizations,
has submitted a dissenting opinion encompassing in response to the
Social Media (Usage and Regulation) Bill, 2024, proposed by the
government of Nepal. They point out various issues, including
unnecessary restrictions on freedom of expression and communication,
potential violations of fundamental rights, ambiguity in criminal
provisions, concerns about privacy rights, inconsistency with the
principle of proportionality, a vague definition of serious crime,
broad executive powers, and the looming threat of censorship.

6. EU: Call for precise interpretation of Digital Services Act
In a statement to European Commissioner Thierry Breton, ARTICLE 19 and
Access Now welcome the commissioner’s reassurance that the enforcement
of the Digital Services Act framework will fully respect fundamental
rights. They wish to reiterate that the platforms must not only be
‘effective’ in dealing with illegal and harmful content, but that they
also ought to be necessary and proportionate, strictly adhering to
international freedom of expression standards:

8. New Digital Tool Provides State-by-State Analysis of High Court
Rulings on Abortion
State Constitutions and Abortion Rights tool features a user-friendly
interactive map outlining each state high court’s rulings and
constitutional provisions.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###
1. South Africa’s Cyber Strategy Under Ramaphosa: Limited Progress, Low Priority
South Africa has adopted a national cybersecurity strategy and
established a military Cyber Command. But for years, other issues have
been ranked above cybersecurity, such as corruption, poverty, and
racial injustice.
2. Preventing Falls with the Support of Tech
Nature Medicine reports that an exergaming intervention — a computer
game designed to train elements of the cognitive and perceptual system
— is more effective than minimal intervention (consisting of written
educational materials). This is the first large-scale trial to target
brain function as the primary focus for prevention, and to use a
remote digital system to deliver the intervention.

3. China’s TikTok Users Face Punishment for Vulgar Content
Beijing has introduced a rating system for China’s version of TikTok,
Douyin, that will penalize users who stream content containing sexual
innuendos or promotion of “abnormal beauty standards.”

4. Ukraine Security Service Probes Possible Secret Surveillance of Journalists
Ukraine’s domestic security service said on Wednesday it was
investigating whether several employees of an investigative journalism
outlet had been put under illegal surveillance, after a video online
claimed to show them taking recreational drugs.
5. The USA: More Police Are Using Your Cameras for Video Evidence
Police “nerve centers” are blurring the line between public and
private surveillance.

6. European Commission Discusses “Going Dark”: Behind Closed Doors
EDRi and 20 organizations call on the High Level Group on Access to
Data for Effective Law Enforcement for greater transparency and
participation of all stakeholders.
7. Users Choice with Google
Starting March 6th of this year, you can choose how much data to share
with Google. The company now allows users to decide the amount of
information they want to share (or not) with the provider as they can
opt for “unlinking” certain services from each other. The move comes
as the big tech giant gets ready to comply with new data-sharing rules
introduced by the Digital Market Act.
8. EU Set to Allow Draconian Use of Facial Recognition Tech, Say Lawmakers
Late tweaks to the EU’s artificial intelligence law have caused uproar
over loopholes for biometric identification.
9. How Offline-First Edtech Addresses Education Disparities Worldwide
